Austrian F1 Grand Prix 2022 SOLD OUT
Thursday 7 July 2022 (6 Days / 5 Nights)
Surrounded by mountains, lush green fields, and the Styrian Alps, the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring is a must see for any F1 fan.
The story of the Austrian Grand Prix begins, as with most Grands Prix, with a local group of motor racing enthusiasts in the 1950s. They created a simple L-shaped circuit with cones and hay bales in the town of Zeltweg. The first race held there in 1958, for international sportscars, was won by Wolfgang von Trips in a Porsche, but though the remarkably bumpy track drew criticism from some, the circuit went on to hold two rounds of the Formula Two Championship in 1959 and 1960. The organisers, however, dreamed of hosting a Formula One race, and in 1961 and 1963, Zeltweg staged non-championship events, won by Innes Ireland and Jack Brabham respectively.
The interest these events had stirred in Austria led to the rise of an Austrian superstar in Jochen Rindt. With Rindt ascending through the F1 ranks, Zeltweg pushed for a championship race, and in 1964 the dream was realised, with Lorenzo Bandini going on to claim his one and only victory in the sport. In 1965 Formula One racing decided not to return, but the sportscar event was still run and won by local hero Rindt in a Ferrari.
Rindt's success, coupled with a growing interest in F1 racing, led to enough funding being found for a purpose-built circuit to be created. The Osterreichring was located in a natural basin and proved to be one of the fastest tracks in the world. Its impressive corners, wonderful aesthetics and demand on driver skill would pass into Formula One legend.
Discover the sights of Graz with its beautiful architecture, World Cultural Heritage & design: Clock Tower, Mausoleum, Schlossberg, Burggarten & many more.
Graz can be introduced quickly: epicurean capital, the town of red roofs and of the clock tower with its varied history. Baroque buildings, idyllic courtyards and futuristic art, such as the Kunsthaus gallery on the River Mur and the Murschnecke (Mur Snail), the steel café in the middle of Styria's main river. It is a meeting point for art and culture, the southern flair for modern living and enjoyable experiences!
However, the area surrounding the region's capital is also worth mentioning. Graz's local mountain, the Schöckl, has an almost Alpine character.
The Rettenbachklamm (Rettenbach Gorge), which is practically in the middle of the town, will enchant you with its little torrents and steep tracks leading to the top. The Murradweg also runs through Graz and takes you to the south of the state. To wine and thermal spas. To Maribor, Graz's sister town.
Graz is giving its all as a Grand Prix capital
Under the motto of Pole Position Graz, the entire urban area of the Styrian capital has been striving for a few weeks to emphasise its connections to motor racing. The city’s buses have been given a new Formula 1 car design, with pit stop crews depicted at the bus stops, while certain squares and streets have been decorated with flags featuring the Spielberg logo, with a lot of shop windows also kitted out in Formula 1 style. Guests on public transport are being given an extra Formula 1-related treat – popular comedian Alex Kristan is parodying Niki Lauda in announcing the stops. For a few weeks there has also been a marvellous exhibition in the city centre with around 40 pictures of Formula 1 photographer Rainer W. Schlegelmilch. the main square in Graz is to become a fan area with a giant screen showing the race weekend from the Red Bull Ring, along with a pit stop game and exhibition of Formula 1 cars.
